This question came up earlier in a Skype chat I'm in. Essentially it went like this, what is your favorite type of Rpg/ Rpg Maker game?

There was a listing, as such:

1.) Adventure [More Final Fantasy like]

2.) Farming/ Chore Duty [Harvest Moon]

3.) Mystery [Pff you got me on this one readers]

4.) Other


My personal favorite is Adventure. The Rpg Maker games I'd personally recommend trying in this Genre are Prelude of Identity and Passage of The Hollow Moon.

Now then, what are YOUR favorite types, and what games would you recommend, commercial or not? Feel free to list more than one.

My favorites...Hm... well, so far you have listed one already, ADVENTURE! my others are action rpg as well.

Adventure/Action is one of my favorites

I recommend playing Soul Quest: Legend of Zairon, Prophecy: The Legend of the Demon Kingdom, and Feral Dreams Great action/adventure games.

Ah, of course, action and adventure such as Kingdom Hearts and handheld Final fantasy games (I don't like the PS version, except FF7)
And danmaku (Bullet hell) games, such as Touhou Project

I see, I see. All sound like fun games. Actually, most named here I have tried. Except Touhou. I'm sure I certain someone won't like that though.

Mystery...though I've never seen a Mystery Game done in RPG Maker yet...

Actually I've seen one. It looked pretty good, and had some extremely detailed art and maps. Never tried it though. I need my sense of adventure and boss monsters. ~

I love adventure RPGs, that's what I grew up on, I'll recommend any 16-bit era Squaresoft game, and for RPG Maker games, Legionwood.

I also like Tactical RPGs. Disgaea is probably my favorite series for that, it's easier, but the over-the-top element makes it so much fun. Haven't really played any tactical rpgs made on RM.

You know what, now that I think about it, I don't even remember seeing many if at all any tactical Rpg's on Maker. Kinda sad. Gonna have to change that one day.

Have you seen the game Cluedo? I wonder yet if that is doable in RPG Maker XP or VX, but with how complicated it is...I doubt it. But some people out there like me, hahaha, tried it...and lol I failed, it is doable by events, so to speak, but with how you manage to get random suspects in a random game, that's different.

Yea, that's sounds like it take decades on end, but the results sound really tasty. Might give it a whirl myself just to see how far I get.

Stories are usually what hook me, gameplay is usually a second rated thing to me, since as long as there is some kind of interaction, I'm satisfied.

Good points. Actually, I try to base a lot of my work more on story too. It's just kind of hard to do so in a way that will keep the players of today interested. Ah gaming, I love you.
